Special Needs

Our Kindergarten aims to have regard to the DfEE Code of Practice on the Identification and Assessment of Special Educational Needs, and to provide appropriate learning opportunities for all children in conjunction with:

  • Children with special needs, like all other children, are admitted to the pre-school after consultation between parents and the Principal Lucia Federici.
  • Assists us in getting to know the child and identifying where extra help or support may be required.
  • Extra consideration may be given in regard of a child with special needs behaviour.
  • Usually we allow half a term for a child to settle before drawing up an individual educational plan with parents.
  • Other children at the school may be encouraged to assist and support a child with special needs, although in past experience we have noticed how naturally children appear to help each other with very little prompting from the adults.
  • It is felt that a child’s needs cannot be met in the pre-school without the support of a one-to-one worker, funding will be sought from the local authority to provide welfare support.
