Mount Carmel at Home - 23/04/2020
Posted 2020-04-22 20:27:47Welcome to Mount Carmel at Home. These sessions will enable parents to carry out fun and educational home learning activities with their children. We recommend establishing a routine and setting aside a time in day for home learning. It is preferable to do these activities in the morning when children are more alert than towards the end of the day when they can be tired and less cooperative.
Share your child's learning with us by uploading photos and videos to their Learning Journey on Famly, by uploading on Instagram and adding the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome or posting on our Facebook page. Your child's teachers will love to see what you have been up to!

Today’s activities for preschool children
Activity 1 - Repeating patterns.

What you’ll need | The ‘Repeating patterns’ worksheet, coloured pens or pencils and small toys/objects from around the house to make repeating patterns with. |
Method | Show your child the worksheet and tell them they will need to finish the repeating patterns. Start by demonstrating the pattern (out loud) eg: red, blue, red, blue etc. Then when you reach the end, pause and ask them what should be next. If they say the incorrect colour/shape, then go through the pattern again emphasising each difference (sometimes using a different voice tone for one part of the pattern helps). Next, your child should draw the missing part of the pattern in the box provided. Always encourage them to say the shapes out loud to help them organise the pattern in their heads. Finally, find some objects or toys at home for your child to make physical repeating patterns with. If your child finds these easy, you could also try 2 and 3 part repeating patters eg: red, red, blue, blue, red, red etc or: car, brick, spoon, car, brick, spoon etc. Your child should build their patterns from left to right, in order to enlist good habits for reading and writing later on. |
What did we learn? | Mathematics: Shape, space and measures – Uses familiar objects and common shapes to create and recreate patterns and build models. Literacy: Reading – Knows that print carries meaning and, in English, is read from left to right and top to bottom. |
Activity 2 - ‘Mail a Hug’
What you’ll need |
|
Method | Ask them who they would like to send a hug to? Lay the paper on the floor and get your child to lay on top of it from the chest up.. ask them to put their arms out wide flat on the paper as though they are going to give someone a ‘BIG HUG’. Tell them to lay still while you (the adult) drawers round their head, shoulders, arms and part way down their chest. Once this has been done get your child to colour or paint themselves. Once finished, send or give to a family member or friend needing a BIG HUG! If you don't have a large piece of paper - get them to draw round both of their hands, cut them out and try to get them to write a special message on each hand. It may be that you write down what they say? Make a hole in each hand and get them to thread some string or wool through, connecting the hands together. Send in the post or deliver to someone who deserves a BIG HUG! |
What did we learn? | EAD - Pencil control and to encourage them to draw themselves ..having the understanding that we are all different. PD - Hand and eye control, scissor skills, PSE - Getting them to express their emotions/feelings. |
Activity 3 - Registration Spotting.

What you’ll need | All optional: A clipboard (or hard book) to lean on, a piece of blank paper and a pencil A device for your child to take pictures on You may wish to use the attached TWINKL Registration Plates document if you are unable to go out on a daily walk. |
Method
| Talk with your child about different modes of transport.
You may wish to watch this story together - the journey home from Grandpa’s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKcrsv_t8Ko Which of the vehicles might they see when they are out walking? (remind them they may even need to look up!?) How many different vehicles have they travelled on? What is their favourite way to travel?
On your daily walk today look out for different types of vehicles. Some of these vehicles, such as cars, lorries etc… have Registration Plates, this is like the vehicle having its own special name so people can recognise it. Invite your child to spot letters and numbers they recognise on the number plates that they see? They might like to record this on their paper or maybe even have a go at taking a photograph themselves of the numbers or letters they have found. Can they find their age on a registration plate? Perhaps your child can “read” and recognise certain makes of cars by looking at the badges? They may be able to recognise their car make or that of friends and family. Can your budding photographers photograph these? We would love to see their pictures and you can send these via the famly app, through Facebook or share via Instagram using the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome. |
What did we learn? | Literacy: We are learning to show interest in print in the environment and to recognise some familiar words. Mathematics: We are learning to show an interest in numerals in the environment. Understanding the World: We are learning to operate simple equipment by pressing parts to take images. |
