Mount Carmel at Home - 24/03/2020

Posted 2020-03-23 20:47:55

Welcome to Mount Carmel at Home. These sessions will enable parents to carry out fun and educational home learning activities with their children.  We recommend establishing a routine and setting aside a time in day for home learning. It is preferable to do these activities in the morning when children are more alert than towards the end of the day when they can be tired and less cooperative.

Share your child's learning with us by uploading photos and videos to their Learning Journey on Famly, by uploading on Instagram and adding the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome or posting on our Facebook page. Your child's teachers will love to see what you have been up to!

Activity 1

Spring themed pegs cards

What you’ll need

  • Clothes pegs
  • Print out of Spring themed peg cards

Method

Print out the peg cards and cut each A4 sheet into the 4 separate cards. Show your child one card at a time. Ask your child to read the three numerals out loud that they can see at the bottom of the card. Model counting the pictures on the card and then squeeze the peg open and place it on the corresponding numeral at the bottom of the card. Opening a clothes peg is a task in itself that helps build children’s fine motor strength. Repeat with the other cards.

What did we learn?

Physical Development (PD):

We are learning to use one-handed tools and equipment.

Activity 2

Toilet tube butterflies

What you’ll need

  • 1 toilet tube or kitchen roll tube
  • Butterfly wings template (print out)
  • Any paints, pens, collage materials you can find – there is no limit here, let your child get creative!
  • Googly eyes are a nice extra but not essential, you can always add these with a pen or some collage materials.

Method

Show your child a picture of a butterfly and explain that the tube will be the body. Ask them to decorate the tube however they wish and add a face. Cut out the template of the wings and allow them to decorate these too. When everything is complete glue the centre of the wings to the back of the tube and watch your butterfly take off! If you have pipe cleaners these make excellent antennae but you could also use strips or paper or card. Why not upload your creation to Famly to show us?!

What did we learn?

Creative Development: Exploring and using materials, learning to use various construction materials and explore how colours can be changed.

Knowledge and Understanding of the world: Noticing detailed features of objects in their environment and encouraging them to talk about some of the things they have observed about animals, plants etc.

Activity 3

Signs of Spring Trail

What you’ll need

  • The ‘Spring Trail’ checklist (print out)
  • A pencil or pen
  • A clipboard or something to rest on eg: a hardback book.

Method

Show your child the spring checklist and talk about all the items in the pictures with them. Show them how to draw a tick and encourage them to trace over the grey ones at the top of the sheet before attempting their own. Go outside into the garden, or even better; for a walk and try to spot any items on the list. Encourage your children to take in what is all around them, talking about any changes in the trees or any wildlife you may see etc. Discuss how many they have found and how many are left to find as you go along.

Finally, ask your child to count up how many they spotted in total and circle the correct numeral at the bottom of the page. Perhaps you could take photographs of any other signs of spring you found and upload it to Famly to show us?

What did we learn?

Physical/Mathematics: Mark making, fine motor skills and developing an understanding that we can record using marks.

Understanding of the world: The opportunity to observe and talk about natural found items, plants and animals as well as developing children’s understanding of how things change over time.
