Mount Carmel at Home - 30/03/2020
Posted 2020-03-29 23:40:59Welcome to Mount Carmel at Home. These sessions will enable parents to carry out fun and educational home learning activities with their children. We recommend establishing a routine and setting aside a time in day for home learning. It is preferable to do these activities in the morning when children are more alert than towards the end of the day when they can be tired and less cooperative.
Share your child's learning with us by uploading photos and videos to their Learning Journey on Famly, by uploading on Instagram and adding the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome or posting on our Facebook page. Your child's teachers will love to see what you have been up to!

Today’s activities for preschool children
Activity 1 | We’re going on a ‘d’ hunt… |
What you’ll need |
|
Method | Show your child the large ‘d’ sound and ask them to say the sound. Next, tell your child there are lots of ‘d’ sounds hiding with the others in the box. They should draw a circle around any they find. Finally, ask them to think of something that begins with the sound ‘d’ and draw it in the box provided. They may even want to have a go at writing it too. |
What did we learn? | Communication and Language: Understanding – Responding to simple instructions. Literacy: Writing – gives meaning to the marks they draw. Reading – Hears and says the initial sound in words. |
Activity 2 | Egg box flowers - Easter Wreath |
What you’ll need |
|
Method | Get your child to paint the bottoms of the egg cartons and then the sides in a different colour, leave them to dry and then separate. Get your child to cut each section to create a flower, you may wish to glue pom poms into the centre of each. Mount onto a cardboard circle (a pizza base is good for this!) or square and hang on your front door. You can share your beautiful Spring creations with us via Famly, Facebook or using the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome on Instagram. |
What did we learn? | Expressive Arts and Design - Creative development |
Activity 3 | A Rainbow Scavenger Hunt |
What you’ll need |
|
Method | At this time the rainbow has been a symbol of hope for many. Some of your children will have made rainbows at Nursery a few weeks ago. If you go on a walk in the local area you will see rainbows in many windows, your child might like to count the ones they can spot! Today, set your child the task of a Rainbow Scavenger Hunt – this can be done indoors or outdoors, or to get your child really moving - both! Firstly, identify the colours of the Rainbow. Your child may wish to listen to and dance to this song: Colours of the Rainbow | Colour Song for Kids | Learning the Colours | Jack Hartmann https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mruaPDxoEw Help your child to “read” the list and tick or mark make on the checklist when they have found something of each colour – indigo and violet are definitely the most challenging here and children and adults alike may need some help with this one! You may wish to give some clues, for example… “An orange coloured vegetable, something blue outside, an indigo coloured fruit etc…” We would love to see your collections and you can share these with us by uploading on Instagram and adding the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome, posting on our Facebook page or uploading photos to Famly. |
What did we learn? | Understanding of the World (UW): We are learning to notice detailed features of our environment and we are looking closely at similarities and differences. Literacy (L): We are learning to make marks and to give meanings to our marks. We are learning that information can be relayed in the form of print. |
