Mount Carmel at Home - 30/04/2020
Posted 2020-04-30 07:48:02Welcome to Mount Carmel at Home. These sessions will enable parents to carry out fun and educational home learning activities with their children. We recommend establishing a routine and setting aside a time in day for home learning. It is preferable to do these activities in the morning when children are more alert than towards the end of the day when they can be tired and less cooperative.
Share your child's learning with us by uploading photos and videos to their Learning Journey on Famly, by uploading on Instagram and adding the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome or posting on our Facebook page. Your child's teachers will love to see what you have been up to!

The sound of the week is "O" - https://youtu.be/U2HYM9VXz9k?t=258
Theme: People that help us
Today’s activities for preschool children
Activity 1 - Let's find 'O'

Activity 1 | Let’s find ‘o’. |
What you’ll need | The ‘Let’s find o’ checklist, a pen or pencil, access to one or more children’s books. |
Method | Talk through the first part of the sheet with your child (the checklist). Explain that you will be looking for ‘o’ in different places. They might even be able to guess some of them using the pictures. Guide your child through the challenge but try to encourage their independence as much as possible. On the second half of the worksheet, go through each picture with your child and ask them to say the word out loud (to check they know what each one is). Next, ask them to identify the ones that begin with an ‘o’ sound and draw a circle around them. Encourage your child to use an anti clockwise motion when drawing circles, this supports their letter writing for o, a, g & c later on. |
What did we learn? | Literacy: Reading – Hears and says initial sounds in words, links sounds to letters. Physical Development: Moving and handling – Begins to use anti clockwise movement. Communication and Language: Listening and attention – Maintains attention and concentrates on an age appropriate activity, for an appropriate length of time. |
Activity 2 - Number Detective Game

Activity 2 | Number Detective Game |
What you’ll need | Items and objects from around your home with numbers on; Watch, clock, money, credit card, train ticket, shoe, Thomas train, measuring jug, milk cartons, tube of toothpaste, hand cream, soap etc... any items with barcodes on. Glasses, dressing up clothes, magnify glass. Paper, clipboard, pen. |
Method | Produce some everyday objects that have numbers on and stand them on a table. Get your child to pretend they are a detective. They might want to get into character and dress up for this? Give them some paper (a clipboard is always good if you have one) Tell them they need to solve a mystery and search for the numbers on the items. When they have found the numbers get them to tell you the numbers they have found and to write them down on their paper |
What did we learn? | Understanding of the world - Numbers are everywhere! Mathematics - locating and Identifying numbers on everyday objects. |
Activity 3 - Doctor's bag

Activity 3 | Doctors Bag |

| We are thinking about “People who help us” and in this session we are focussing on DOCTORS! Sit down with a cup of tea for 5 minutes while your child watches: Topsy and Tim go to the Doctors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vRveJfsD0o Discuss a time the doctor may have helped your child. With your child you may wish to sing “Miss Polly Had a Dolly.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z2ltprMZWo Explain to your child that you have a doctor’s bag with you. There are lots of things inside it that a doctor might use at their surgery or in a hospital to help make unwell people feel better. Invite your child to take an item out of the bag. Allow them to explore it and talk about it. What is it? What is it used for? What is it made from? Then choose another item. Today we are going to make our own doctor’s bag. Fold an A4 piece of card/paper in half. Draw or stick a first aid sign on the outside (see attached) and add some handles. Provide your child with the sheet “Doctor’s bag MCK at home sheet.” With your child identify the items on the sheet and talk about what a doctor might use them for? Support your child to cut them out and stick them inside their doctor’s bag. Can they think of anything else the doctor might need? Your child may like to continue this play using their doctors kit to treat their teddies, dolls or even family members. Please find attached TWINKL role-play resources to support this if you would like them.
If you feel it is appropriate you may wish to link this to all the hard work the doctors are doing in the hospitals at the moment and how thankful we all are to them. There is an online book available aimed at younger children to explain coronavirus, although this may need to be adapted to meet the understanding of your child. The main message for your child is:
|
What did we learn? | Physical Development: We are learning to use one handed tools and equipment. Understanding the World: We are learning to show an interest in different occupations. |
We would love to see your child’s activities and you can share with us on the Famly app, through Facebook or via Instagram using the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome. |
