Mount Carmel at Home - 04/05/2020
Posted 2020-05-03 23:17:58Welcome to Mount Carmel at Home. These sessions will enable parents to carry out fun and educational home learning activities with their children. We recommend establishing a routine and setting aside a time in day for home learning. It is preferable to do these activities in the morning when children are more alert than towards the end of the day when they can be tired and less cooperative.
Share your child's learning with us by uploading photos and videos to their Learning Journey on Famly, by uploading on Instagram and adding the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome or posting on our Facebook page. Your child's teachers will love to see what you have been up to!

The sound of the week is "U" - https://youtu.be/U2HYM9VXz9k?t=275
Theme: St Albans
Today’s activities for preschool children
Activity 1 - Learning to write 'U'
What you’ll need | The ‘Learning to write ‘u’ worksheet, a pens or pencils. |
Method | Talk to your child about the sound and help them to identify it. You may want to show them the ‘Jolly phonics’ song for ‘u’ on YouTube. Next, ask them to trace each ‘u’ letter with a pen or pencil, encouraging them to begin at the dot. Now see if they can try to write some on their own. Once they have finished, ask them if they can think of anything that starts with an ‘u’ sound (you may want to use multiple choice if they aren’t sure eg: by asking, “Is it u for rainbow or u for umbrella?”). Once your child has decided on a word they can do one of the following based on their level:
Finally, it is time for your child to get creative and draw something beginning with ‘u’ in the box! |
What did we learn? | Literacy: Reading – Hears and says initial sounds in words, links sounds to letters. Communication and Language: Listening and attention – Maintains attention and concentrates on an age appropriate activity, for an appropriate length of time. |
Activity 2 - Magazine Mosaic City Sign
What you’ll need |
|
Method | Ask your child to cut small pieces of a magazine or newspaper and get them to stick the pieces onto the template sign of ‘St Albans’ creating a ‘mosaic effect’ Cut the letters out and mount on to a piece of card to create your sign. |
What did we learn? | Expressive Arts and Design - Begin to understand that using different media can be combined to create new effects |
Activity 3 - Market Place
What you’ll need |
|
Method | Listen to and try to sing together the Days of the week song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtQcnZ2JWsY "We live in St Albans and there is a market selling many different things on 2 days of the week in St. Albans. Can you guess which 2 days? I will give you a clue… Sunday, Monday, Tuesday… what’s next? Wednesday And Thursday, Friday… what’s next? Saturday. That is right… on Wednesdays and Saturdays there are market stalls in St. Albans. What do you think they might sell?" Show your child a video clip of St Albans market: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V5-J-UeTb0 (up to 1 minute and 12 seconds) Ask your child if they spotted anything else for sale that they did not think of before? Today encourage your child to set up their own market stall. First ask your child what they would like to “sell” and gather up resources from around the home. Set up a pretend stall with a till or box to collect the money. Provide shopping bags and pennies and together place price labels on the items for sale ranging from 1p up to 10p. If your child has an apron they might like to wear this. Please demonstrate to your child how market sellers call out what they have to sell. Encourage your child to check the number of pennies matches the price against the price tag as they are paid. We hope your child has a wonderful time role-playing St. Albans market day.
Please send us photographs or videos of your little market traders on the Famly app, or through Facebook or via Instagram using the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome. |
