Mount Carmel at Home - 14/05/2020

Posted 2020-05-14 07:24:50

Welcome to Mount Carmel at Home. These sessions will enable parents to carry out fun and educational home learning activities with their children. We recommend establishing a routine and setting aside a time in day for home learning. It is preferable to do these activities in the morning when children are more alert than towards the end of the day when they can be tired and less cooperative.

Share your child's learning with us by uploading photos and videos to their Learning Journey on Famly, by uploading on Instagram and adding the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome or posting on our Facebook page. Your child's teachers will love to see what you have been up to!

Today’s activities for preschool children

Activity 1 - London Bus Maths

What you’ll need

  • The ‘London Bus Maths’ print out,
  • a pen or pencil.

Method

Show your child the London bus sheet, point to the background and ask them if they think they know where it is. You might want to point out any landmarks they have be aware of or have seen before.

Next, explain that there are many bus stops in London and lots of people are waiting to ride the bus. Ask your child to count the number of people at each bus stop and find the numeral on the number line, underneath the bus. Can they copy the number onto the sign?

Upload your work to Famly, we would love to see it!

What did we learn?

Mathematics: Numbers – Knows that numbers identify how many are in a set, shows an interest in number problems, selects the correct numeral to represent 1 to 5, then 1 to 10 objects, counts an irregular arrangement of up to 10 items, beginning to re3present numbers using fingers, marks on paper or pictures.

Understanding the world: The world – Comments and asks questions about aspects of their familiar world such as the place where they live.

Activity 2 - Phone a London Landmark

What you’ll need

  • Toy phone/old real phone/calculator – anything which displays numbers 0-9
  • London Landmarks Phone Book Sheet (attached)
  • London Landmarks Cards Sheet (attached)
  • Access to Internet with volume

Method

There are many things to see in London. Share this clip with your child and talk about the landmarks William Wiskerson spots as he travels around London:

(This clip is 9 minutes long so please feel free to skip through to see landmarks as you feel appropriate for your child).

Today we are going to help William to call some London landmarks on the telephone. Print the London Landmarks Phone Book Sheet and the London Landmarks Cards Sheet. Cut the cards sheet into 5 individual pictures (the MCK symbol is not one) and turn face down on the table.

Invite your child to turn over one of the landmark cards, help them to recall what it is called and match it to the landmark on their phone book sheet. Use the role-play phone to press the correct numbers to call the landmark. Repeat with all the other cards.

Please note: The print outs are editable so please feel free to adjust the numbers on the London Landmarks Phone Book Sheet to address your child’s own needs. You may wish to include less numbers, numbers only to 5 or you may like to extend their learning by offering them an increased number of digits for each phone number.

Where else could you call in London? Maybe a famous shop like Harrods or a black taxicab to take you to the Ritz!

.

We would love to see photographs or videos of your busy children on the Famly app, or through Facebook or via Instagram using the hashtag #MountCarmelatHome.

Activity 3 - Teddy Bear's Picnic Lunch

What you’ll need

  • Teddy bears,
  • Picnic blanket,
  • Invitations,
  • Writing pens, pencils
  • Scarf (to use as a blindfold)
  • Food for the picnic,
  • Song Lyrics for ‘Teddy bear, Teddy Bear turn around’
  • Access to Youtube.

Method

The teddy bears want to have a picnic! Get your children to write invitations inviting as many Bears to come to the picnic. We have provided you with a template for the invitations, or you can design your own.

Next it is time to prepare the food. Your child can help prepare the picnic with this if you want them to get more involved. Maybe they can put fillings in the sandwiches, or cut up some fruit.

Once the picnic food is prepared get them to set up the picnic blanket and place their teddy bears ready for the feast to begin. If the weather is warm you might want to have your picnic outside in the garden or at a local park. Sit down with your children and the bears (not forgetting your ears!) and play the famous song ‘The teddy bears picnic’

Teddy Bears love to play games too!...Put a blind fold on your child and hand them several teddies to feel, get them to guess who is who?

To finish up, explain that the teddy bears are tired after all the fun they have had and need to go to bed. Sing the song “Teddy bear, teddy bear turn around”

“Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear turn around,

(Children turn around)

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear touch the ground,

(Children touch the ground)

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear touch the sky,

(Children reach up high)

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, wave goodbye!

(Children wave ‘Goodbye’)”
